Drug-Free Workforce

Building a safer workforce

IBEW Local 71 is committed to safety, professionalism and accountability on every job. A drug-free workforce is an essential part of that commitment.

Many employers and project owners require workers to perform in a drug-free environment, and Local 71 supports policies and programs that help protect our members and the public.

Substance misuse can put people at risk and disrupt job performance. National organizations have long documented the significant costs and impacts associated with alcohol and drug abuse in the workplace, including lost productivity, absenteeism and preventable  incidents.

Benefits of a drug-free workforce

Improved safety

A drug-free workforce supports a safer work environment. Electrical work requires focus, coordination and consistent adherence to procedures. When everyone on the crew is fit for duty, it helps reduce the risk of accidents, injuries or worse and strengthens a culture where workers look out for one another.

Our safety culture is reinforced through training and jobsite standards, and supported by drug-free workplace expectations that help ensure every member can perform at the level the work demands.

Lower costs and stronger project performance

Drug-free workplace programs can also support better outcomes for employers and owners.

Fewer incidents can mean less downtime, fewer delays and lower workers’ compensation and medical costs. Reliable attendance and consistent performance help projects stay on schedule and protect the workforce’s reputation.

When employers can count on skilled journeymen and apprentices who meet drug-free workplace requirements, it supports productivity, quality workmanship and a safer environment for everyone on site.
